Google need to pay for the contents?

The way google make money is in a way like using tons of users contents with no cost. This lady from Zdnet blog said something about it.

Why then does Wall Street darling, $140 billion market cap, 29% profit margin Google wantonly “make money solely on the backs of other people’s content,” without paying for it, as Thomas Rubin, Associate General Counsel for Copyright, Trademark, and Trade Secrets, Microsoft decried today at the Association of American Publishers Annual Meeting. I have asked just such a thing, many a time, at this Digital Markets Blog and in my recent Fast Company Magazine Google debate.

Cisco goes very generous to give apple more time to respond to iPhone trademark lawsuit.

The fact that Apple never signed final agreement regarding the trademark thingy. Cisco claimed that Steve Jobs gave out iPhone to the public without Cisco's permission to use the name iPhone.

I really don't know who deserve the name but most likely Apple will get the name with some money or a lot of money.

Yesterday, Microsoft announced pricing and release dates for its anticipated Zune portable media player. Once thought to be the greatest threat to Apple's dominant iPod lines, some experts now contend that the device will do more damage to Microsoft partners instead. Comment by lopla on 9/29/06

OMG, my 17 yr old stepson and I started talking about the Zune. He said he's getting a nano for Christmas and his friend Jeremy was going to get a Zune until his friends started calling him a "Zunetard" and laughing at him, this is not looking good for MS.. It's actually going to be "gay" to own a "Zune", what a disaster.

Man, this is harsh. Even though I think Zune is not yet ready for compete with ipods.

AOL Moves to Free Web Services

AOL will be offering its services, such as e-mail and anti-spam software, for free to broadband users.
The free services offer is part of AOL’s strategy to boost its online advertising revenue by redirecting traffic to its websites.

In the second quarter AOL, recorded a fall in revenue of 2 percent from $2.097 billion in the same quarter last year to $2.046 billion this year. The slight decline was attributable to a fall in subscriber revenue; due primarily to a decrease in the domestic AOL brand subscribers. As of June 30, 2006, the AOL service totaled 17.7 million U.S. members, a decline of 976,000 from the prior quarter and 3.1 million from the year-ago quarter.

A 40 percent decline of $129 million decline in online marketset this 11 percent decline in subscriber revenue was a 40 percent or $129 million rise in online advertising.

Time Warner President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Bewkes said: “The next logical step for AOL (is) to capitalize further on the explosive rise in broadband usage and online advertising. With its robust and rapidly expanding advertising operation, we expect to put AOL back on a growth path.”

Microsoft Zune really need a lot of effort on it. This can't just be a advertising thing or what so ever. If MS is going to seriously challenge them, they need great software like itune ( DRM thing should be solved also - closed DRM causes a lot of trouble but Apple made their package great and already convinced people. )
And MS windows vista has to be super good and should be realeased right on time. ( more delay for that will just mess up the zune project for sure. )

Pod 'killer' needs 'hundreds of millions of dollars' and many years, says top exec

Microsoft does not expect to see a return on its upcoming Zune portable media device for several years, according to a top executive at the company.

Robbie Bach, president of the software giant's entertainment and devices division, stated that it would take three to five years before Microsoft reaped anything from its "hundreds of millions of dollars of investment" in Zune.

"It is something that is going to take time," he told financial analysts yesterday. "We think of this over several years. This is not a six-month investment."

Why Microsoft Zune is iPod's New Challenge

After weeks of mounting speculation, Microsoft revealed last week what had been dubbed the industry’s worst kept secret - the existence of Zune. The project involves a new combination of hardware and software products to be released later this year, aimed at breaking iPod’s stranglehold on the digital music and portable music player markets.

In what is shaping up to be a clash between computer titans, many are keeping close watch to see whether Microsoft will break through or break down in the face of iPod dominance.

So far, Microsoft has released scant details about the new project. The initial device will have a Wi-Fi wireless connection and will use a hard drive to store music. Chris Stephenson, general manager of marketing for Microsoft, in a prepared statement stated the purpose for Zune. “We see a great opportunity to bring together technology and community to allow consumers to explore and discover music together.

Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, said that the Redmond, Wash.-based firm would prove to be a powerful challenger to the iPod due to its enormous cash flow. He added that for Microsoft to win would require 20 percent planning and an 80 percent focus on executing the plan well. As Microsoft enters the market, his firm casts its eye on the huge market potential where conditions are ripe for entry. He said it would not be an easy challenge, given the dominance of Apple.

Zango Still Pushing Their Videos on MySpace

Looks like ZangoBar, er I mean Zango, are still up to their same old tricks, trying to make it look like an affiliate is to blame for all their troubles. The Paperghost busted an affiliate of theirs pushing Zango on MySpace, a site they themselves have said is hands off, and soon after, the page pushing the videos was gone, and the MySpace profiles that were being used were also gone. Or so we thought. In his latest post, the Paperghost discovers that not only is the guy who was pushing Zango on MySpace is back pushing them on another site, but the old page is still up.

If Zango had actually killed his account off for doing the above naughtiness…and you’d assume they had considering his Video page got “pulled” (why pull it if you’ve done nothing wrong?) their S3 technology should prevent these installs - however, as you can see here, the installs work just fine (you can see Zango is installed in the bottom right hand corner). In fact, the installs work from both the new site I’ve discovered and the old site with the (now hidden) video page.

Google lawyers and plaintiffs involved in a "click fraud" suit are waiting to see if an Arkansas judge will approve a proposed settlement which involves a $90 million payment to resolve the case.

Google has already reached agreement with a majority of the plaintiffs, however a number of smaller retailers have protested, stating that their needs will not be met.

Plaintiffs in the Lane's v. Google case playing out in a Texarkana, Arkansas court room argue that the online search leader has not taken sufficient care to prevent click fraud, a scheme used to inflate the actual number of clicks an advertisement receives from Internet users.

AMD Showcases Quad Core Setup

Advanced Micro Devices Tuesday pledged to release a version of its upcoming enthusiast desktop product, code-name 4x4, for less than $1000.

Pat Moorhead, AMD's vice president of global channel marketing, said the 4x4 was essentially 2 dual-core Athlon 64-FX processors tuned for gaming on a single mother board.

"This will not be limited to just the elite enthusiasts," he said, promising a "two CPU bundle configured at significantly less than $1,000."

Moorhead spoke to a group of journalists in Sunnyvale, AMD's California headquarters. He also demonstrated the configuration for reporters, but declined let them view the product.

AMD's first announced the 4x4 at an analyst conference in June, also mentioning that a number of already available software could take advantage of the technology. Executives from Nero, a developer of the popular Nero Burning Rom, and Luxology, maker of the 3D Modo application, their software already takes advantage of systems like the 4x4.

ATI purchase, price cuts, new technology will be used to battle tough Intel competition

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) made a number of strategic moves against archrival Intel Corp. this week, aiming to capture more market-share and defend against the onslaught of Intel's upcoming products.

Intel is expected to release a new desktop processor, the Conroe on Thursday - a chip offering better technology and features over AMD's current line of products.

AMD made its own headlines, starting the week with a surprise $5.4 billion purchase of Canada based computer graphics chip maker ATI technologies on Monday.

Then on Tuesday, AMD seemingly fired another shot at its cross-town foe, slashing prices across its whole line of processors, including a 50 percent cut for desktop version of its popular Athlon-64.

AMD is coming off a second quarter that disappointed Wall Street, as profits were down. Industry watchers will be looking to see if the company’s moves to battle Intel can boost share prices back up after they dropped nearly 16 percent last Friday to just above $18 where they continue to hover.
